In the Nursery, mathematics are integrated into every part of school life. Most learning takes place through practical experiences. Recording is in our own large format work books.
Reception and Year 1 continue to do mainly practical maths. Maths is integrated into the whole curriculum and recording is made in the early Heinemann maths work books.
Year 2 begin The Fold School Maths Scheme which uses source material from Letts, Ginn and other maths books. Children are taught in a practical, fun manner with as much hands-on experience as possible. As well as the more traditional formal lessons, they have Practical Maths, Mental Arithmetic, and Maths Investigation sessions. The scheme has been designed to allow access to appropriate mathematical skills without the children becoming bored and frustrated by too much copying and needless repetition. Year 2 do not refer to text books but use Math Scheme Booklets, each page of which supplies a format for a lesson which is usually introduced by practical and oral work. Years 3 and 4 Maths Scheme Booklets again have formatted pages which show the child how to set out the work from the text books they are now using. Years 5 and 6 use text books and traditional exercise books accompanied by assignments which the children tick off as they achieve each target. Differentiation is inbuilt into the system with reinforcement and extension challenges incorporated at each stage.
The Maths Booklet Scheme is supported by Heinemann workbooks, Fold School Practical Topic Books, arithmetic and mental arithmetic text books. Weekly tests of tables and mental arithmetic are given.
