Music, Speech and Drama
Music is an important, integral part of our curriculum. Our specially-designed Music Room provides facilities for a wide-range of activities. The younger children enjoy movement, singing, drama and percussion sessions. In the Middle and Upper School, children have included in their weekly time-table:
- Music and Percussion
- Singing in class lessons
- Speech and drama lessons
- Each Christmas we put on three productions:
- The Nursery dress up and sing Christmas songs.
- The Lower School put on a play in the Music Room. All the children have a part and all have full costumes and makeup. Year 1 children have a solo singing and talking part. Parents are invited to watch and it is a real highlight in the year for children, teachers and parents alike.
- The Middle and Upper School put on a major musical extravaganza with full lighting, sound system, costumes and makeup. We re-write a favourite play so that all the children have a part, and children from Year 3 upwards have a solo singing and speaking part. Our first production was "Oliver, The Fold School Way", followed by "The Wizard of Oz" and the following year "Poppins & Co.". What next?
- All children learn to play the recorder from Year 2 upwards.
- Ballet, tap and Jazz dance are taught in house by a specialist dance teacher. This optional extra is taken up by most of the girls, as well as many of our boys.
- We offer an optional facility for piano, violin, viola and voice tuition, either individually or in a small group.
- Our first choir and ensemble were so popular that we now offer junior and senior choirs and junior and senior ensembles.
- We regularly enter children for exams with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, arrange for their transport to the centre and for an accompanist when necessary. Our children consistently perform well in these exams, many achieving merits and distinctions.
- We have been involved in the Worthing Music Festival and the Brighton Springboard Festival with great success.
- In 2007 some of our children were chosen to be included in the children's choir for a professional production of "Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" at the Theatre Royal.
- On a recent school trip to France our children performed a singing, dancing music extravaganza for the mayor and villagers of Bazoges en Pared, to their great delight as reported afterward in the local paper!
