Physical Education

Sport is an important part of the school timetable. It encourages team play and co-ordination skills as well as simply letting off steam in a busy timetable. Children in the Nursery use the playground apparatus and also learn ball skills and basic movement.

Swimming

We have trained our own staff as ASA swimming teachers. Children start swimming once a week from Reception upwards at the King Alfred Leisure centre where we have the use of the learning pool, the young children's beach pool, a diving area, the large slide and a 25 m swimming lane. The children are separated into small groups for lessons according to their ability and all children also enjoy a relaxed play fully supervised by our own staff in the leisure pool.

Gymnastics

All children from Reception upwards work towards the BAGA syllabus at the Brighton and Hove Gymnastics Club. All coaches have BAGA qualifications. Parents are invited to a display at the end of the year.

Ball Skills

Years 1 and 2 go to Wish Park every week to do ball skills (pre-netball and pre-football) with our Football and Netball coaches. An after-school football club is organised if there is demand. Years 3-6 alternate games sessions between Wish Park and the hard courts on the seafront, doing football, netball, rounders, cricket and tennis. If it is raining they are taken to a sport hut in Glebe Villas to play.

Running

One year, Year 4 and 5 children asked whether they could run a children’s marathon. We therefore organised a series of training sessions and all the children successfully completed the run. We are very happy to respond in this way to the fitness goals the children find inspiring.

Badminton

Years 5 and 6 frequently hire courts at King Alfred Leisure Centre to play badminton and short tennis.
