Learning to live together: The Plot and Le Puyenval

We consider that it is very important for children (and parents) to learn to live together with peers and adults other than their family over periods longer than a school day. We have therefore developed an integrated program from Yr 1 upwards taking advantage of two ideal environments at our disposal:
First, we have an outward bounds centre near Horsham (50 mins drive), known as The Plot. Children are taken here for various activities: flora and fauna and fresh water life studies, environmental studies, simple pottery etc, or just a few days camping. The Plot is surrounded by woodland, it has its own pond, little stream and small mixed wood. It is well-equipped with everything needed for comfortable camping.
Second, we have a personal link to a manor house in a small village in France. We have developed close links with the school, Mayor and inhabitants.
- Yr 1 children spend a day at The Plot doing science and outward bound activities.
- Yr 2 children sleep one night in tents at The Plot learning how to camp.
- Yr 3 children sleep two nights (3 days) at The Plot, building on their previous experiences, doing craft, sport, exploration, science, orienteering etc.
- Yr 4 spend 4 nights in the manor house in France, visiting a market, school, shops, boulangerie, goat cheese factory and farm etc.
- Yrs 5 and 6 spend the week working along side French children in the village school and the Manor doing an integrated program of study in both English and French.
- Yr 6 have requested a camping trip to The Plot at the end of this summer term before they leave.
- Trips are arranged throughout the school year to coincide with projects.
