Healthy eating

We have actively been promoting healthy eating since the school was created 23 years ago. All children enjoy a delicious, nutritionally balanced cooked lunch as part of the school day. Our lunches are cooked on the premises by a wonderful chef (Mrs. Brigitte Alexander). Great effort is taken to ensure the highest quality basic ingredients (traceable meat, seasonal, fresh fruit and vegetables, brown pasta, rice, pastry etc.). She makes as many dishes from scratch as possible, without the use of additives, colourings, flavourings and preservatives. She closely monitors the sugar, salt and fat content. The menu has now been extended to a four weekly rotation. A vegetarian option is provided and any allergies catered for.

As part of our social curriculum, children sit in a family group with an adult. Our "fairy taste" system means that all children try everything, be it one pea or the smallest piece of potato. They may have a second or third helping of the things that they like. The children also learn to use their cutlery properly, talk quietly to those around them, wait their turn, ask politely and help the younger children on their table. The wide variety of foods eaten and enjoyed by the older children (as well as all the fan mail on Brigitte's door) is tribute to both the high quality of the food and the success of our methods of teaching healthy eating.

Children have a drink (parents choose between milk, apple juice and water) and a biscuit at playtimes in the morning and afternoon. Dried or fresh fruits (eg dried apricots, banana chips, raisins) are offered at morning breaktimes.

Health care

If your child has an attack of vomiting please keep them away from school for 24 hrs, and in the case of diarrhoea for 48 hrs. The LEA school nurse offers this advice about Head lice: Please buy a Derbac comb and comb your child's hair carefully once a week. If you see a head louse please inform the school immediately so that we can issue you with a treatment leaflet and inform other parents in the group (no names given).
