Homework
Why do we give homework?
Our children work very hard in school and so we do not consider that any "extra teaching" is necessary. We feel that teachers, not parents, should do the teaching. Let us remember that children also need time at home to stand and stare and engage in their own private relaxations and enjoyments. However, we consider that a little homework can provide some clear benefits:
- Reading a book every evening allows parents to track their child's progress and to share a "magic moment" of quality time.
- Children who may complete their work slowly at school can have the opportunity to work with a parent at home (with the co-operation of a teacher) and therefore do not get behind.
- Spellings and tables need to be learned in a rote manner, an ideal activity for parents at home.
- Re-iteration and repetition are essential for the learning of young children - work that doesn't need new teacher input can usefully be done at home.
- Homework can provide an additional opportunity to develop independent study skills, particularly with the older children.
- Years 5/6 have the skills to do unsupervised research via the internet. Most parents have internet at home and with the help of our internet access policy children of this age can research further into topics covered in school.
- Any child who does not have computing facilities at home will be allowed extra access in school.
