Homework

Why do we give homework?
Our children work very hard in school and so we do not consider that any "extra teaching" is necessary. We feel that teachers, not parents should do the teaching. Let us remember that children also need time at home to stand and stare and engage in their own private relaxations and enjoyments. However, we consider that a little homework can provide some clear benefits:

What homework do we expect the children to do?

Reception:

Take reading book home 4 days a week and reread the book they have read to their teacher.

Year 1:

Take their reading book home 4 days a week.
Learn a few spellings each week in the third term.

Year 2:

Take their reading book home daily.
Learn a few spellings each week.
Learn a table each week.
Do a maximum of 30 minutes reiteration of number work at the weekend.

Year 3:

Take their reading book home daily.
Learn a few spellings each week.
Learn a table each week.
Do a maximum of 30 minutes re-iteration of number work at the weekend.
Complete some mental arithmetic on Wednesdays.

Year 4:

Take their reading book home daily.
Learn a few spellings each week.
Learn a table each week.
Do a maximum of 30 minutes reiteration of number work at the weekend.
Complete some mental arithmetic on Wednesdays.
Do an English exercise on Mondays.

Year 5/6:

Homework is given in the lessons to be returned the following week at the same time.
English and Maths are given fortnightly in rotation.
One other subject is given each week. These rotate so that each subject is given for homework about twice a term.
